I have a 40-year-old Epiphone Texan acoustic guitar that has a great sound — until I use the old piezo pickup, which always ends up sounding tinny and thin without a pre-amp. The choice is an expensive active pickup with a clean pre-amp, or something with analog emulation that also serves as a DI box. For under $30, the ADI121 is tough to beat. It emulates a tube-driven microphone, so it has a smooth analog sound versus a pristine (and unforgiving) digital sound. It made a huge difference when I play solo, removing the harsh piezo sounds.
Bottom line: This gives you an active pre-amp that significantly improves the sound of piezo pickups, and still gives you the XLR out to plug directly into your board.
For the money, it’s tough to beat.

I have a couple of $100-plus guitar pre-amps I use when
playing my flamenco guitar through an amplifier. For
that use, they work fine.
For recording to a desktop recording software however
the sound from my pre-amps just wasn’t very good. In
fact, it sucked. I use a pickup-the-world film transducer –
which is an uncommon pickup but it sounds EXACTLY like
the guitar, picking up string-squeak, body taps (golpes)
and syllabant sounds inherent to the nylon-string guitar
but lost when using piezo pickups.
If you want a sound exactly like a microphone, use a
mic – but if you want something close out of a pickup,
give this a try.
I’m overjoyed at how full, balanced and rounded this
little box sounds. It is way sturdier than I expected
for the price. The plastic casing is so hefty you’d
think it was die-cast metal if it were colder to the
touch.
This is a stomp box, and built accordingly. The stomp
button is sturdy and separated adequately from the
rest of the controls, which have a stiffness to them
that will help them retain their settings when you
take it places. The printing which identifies the
controls is in poor-contrast and I have to pick up
the box and hold it close to my face to read the
labels. A minor gripe.
The sound of this little dream box allows me to plug
my guitar into it, then into my Firewire box and
get a good, usable signal. I have no onboard pre-amp
like a Fishman, only a jack because I prefer the external
battery and pre-amp approach for my hand-made (by me)
guitars.
I have only used a flamenco guitar through this box
so I cannot say if it sounds good with a steel string
acoustic. For the price, the sound is amazing. It
makes the signal richer, fatter, and sounds a lot
like a mic’d guitar.

May not be the best, but for the price it works as an acoustic equalizer and DI box. Sounds good through an amp or sound system. Has a slight hiss, so recording may be a problem. I didn’t try to adjust out the hiss, but it may be possible.

I have a Taylor GA4 with a Fishman Rare Earth Humbucker in the soundhole which has volume but no tone controls. I was lacking bass response through the church PA (Mackie board). I tried raising (shimming) the pickup on the bass string side, but it was way too sensitive to control without losing overall string balance. The sweepable midrange and treble and bass EQ on this unit allows me to more accurately translate that beautiful Taylor tone through the PA. The XLR out is great too…solid and quiet. I also have a 200 dollar Fishman Aura pedal with 16 very nice microphonic tone presets and it is great if your pickup has tone controls…I still use it for my Fishman Classic IV equipped guitar. But this pedal is the most affordable DI with sweepable mid that you will find anywhere and it works. Way to go Behringer!

We use this device to preamp an orchestral harp, fitted with a specially made dual transducer pickup attached to its soundboard, into our PA. It works great! We run the balanced out, via a microphone cable, into a PA channel. This yields much better results than running an instrument cable from the 1/4 inch output. The onboard EQ (with adjustable midrange frequency) allows shaping the sound to the room size much better than attempting to do it at the PA. We used to use a small stand-alone tube preamp but had frequent 60 cycle hum problems. The ground lift switch on the ADI21 completely eliminated this problem and it cost less than 1/3 of the tube preamp price. The housing is plastic, but it is NOT feather light and feels very sturdy. The footswitch button does not feel as sturdy as the housing but this isn’t a stomp box that you kick in and out. It’s on 100% of the time. It does have noticeable hiss if you run the output level at 80% and higher so it’s not “perfect” for recording, but for live performance it does everything we need. Behringer does it again!
