Roy Buchanan – Live From Austin Texas
One of the pioneers of the telecaster sound, he was noted for his use of note bending, volume swells, staccato runs and “pinch” harmonics. He is considered by many to be one of America’s most soulful guitar masters, and even 20 years after his death, he maintains an army of devoted fans, including some of rock guitar’s greatest (just ask Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson or Billy Gibbons). This performance, captured on the ACL stage on November 15, 1976, shows Roy Buchanan in his prime at the age of 37. Indeed, it may well be the best high-quality audio/video recording of his complete performance known to exist.

@joebonds As much as I like Satriani, his feeling still isn’t as good as Buchanans.

@moneyquickeasy I kind of like his voice in this version. It’s wonderfully melancholy. The juxtaposition of his guitar and his voice make for an amazing, heartfelt performance.

I know I’m about to get an onslaught of rhetoric from disgruntled tubers but I feel like Roy can go a little over the top sometimes with his Gatemouth Brown-esque wanking. With that being said I still love the guy’s chops and of course his amazing Telecaster and P90 Les Paul tone. He just needs to feel out those times where “less is more”. Great vid.

Well, this is what makes a Telecaster a Telecaster and why hacks like me stick to a Les Paul. WOW – i cannot think of a performance, of this style, that i would rate above this one. Thank you so much for sharing this. True genius. Such TONE. Expression. Wow wow wow.

“And I would like two full cups of beer sitting side by side on my amp before I start the show, thanks.”

Why do people keep referring to various supreme masters of the guitar as underrated? Roy has been an inspiration for decades and will remain so, probably for generations.

He can’t sing … but his guitar can.

A great talent who left us way to soon when Baltimore Police desided to help Roy to commit suicide. Something Roy had threatened for years while on benders on alcohol and drugs. At the time of his death he was drug free and had stopped drinking. His mouth most likely ticked off the police who beat him to death then staged a suicide hanging in his cell. Reports showed he was dead before he was hung.
A one of a kind player who had given us so much in the span of his life.

Sure this video might get some more exposure if it was labeled Hey Joe (as I did the one I upped) but it seems to be doing just fine without it as well, thanks to Roy’s ability to amaze.
