Samson Rubicon Active Ribbon Studio Monitors feature 2-inch Velocity Ribbon high frequency transducers that compliment a 2-way active system capable of reproducing playback in its most natural form. The Rubicon 5a’s feature a bi-amped power section offering 50 watts to a newly designed 5-inch inverted cone low-frequency driver and 25 watts to the high frequency ribbon. They are housed in a shelf-ported wood enclosure with balanced 1/4? and XLR input connections. There is also a 4-segment high frequency lift control that allows the listener to dial in the ribbon tweeter to their preferred level. Ribbon technology gives you clean accurate and precise listening, which is why these monitors sound so natural and lifelike, just like a studio monitor should. There is indeed a professional touch. These babies are loud… well, at least for me they really are. I have them connected to the Creative x-fi extremeMusic sound card. Before I was using Altec Lansing MX5021 (2.1 thx edition). After I bought these, I though I will either sell my old 2.1 Altec, or, I will use them for rear and side sounds.
, but sound seems kinda empty in the mid-range, overcrystalized, I’d say. So having the R5’s as addition worked out fine for me(the guitars and piano keyboards sound much better with R5’s on) – so basically I spent $220 to buy a decent addition to my old speaker system.
The first thing I noticed when I was testing the R5’s – is a lack of bass at normal volume, but very nice and solid treb’s, but not as sharp as on my old Altec’s 2.1 – so there is a significant difference between 20-20000Hz and 22000Hz. So what I did… just don’t laugh… i connected my old 2.1 Altecs and these new R5’s through the splitter to the PC… the effect I got seems quite satisfying. The old 2.1 got deep and quite powerful bass and trebles are razor sharp
Briefly about R5a speakers:

Active (means amplified, so you don’t need amplifier)

Cons: Bass is not so deep. Need to buy a sub.
Trebles sound nice, clean, but not razor sharp.

After six months of very light use, one of the speakers died. It took forever to contact Samson and when they finally accepted the equipment was defective they just never send the replacement.
The guy on the store told me that with this model Samson actually did a good job (compared with all the rest of their substandard products) but at the end this proves that Samson is just a bad and lousy company that can’t make it good.
Be wise and stay away from anything Samson.
