This microphone does the job!….great sound, easy to set up, and haven’t had a single problem with it! I certainly don’t get any “extra noises” from this microphone as I ever did with a wired microphone! It doesn’t pick up every single “puhhhh,” “sssssss,” or “plunk” when touched or tapped. I’m very happy with it….Only thing though, I recommend getting rechargable batteries…as you’ll need to have an extra pair or two if playing long shows as do I….usually 4 hours plus. Most batteries and brands last a good 4-7 hours….but sometimes it just seems that some brands don’t last as long as the others…cheaper in the end to just buy the rechargable ones….it doesn’t take long…and they last a good while!

Thanks Shure for making such a wonderful microphone!!! Will certainly stay with company forever!

Boy, am I ever disappointed in Shure. I’ve been in the business for 20+ years using Shure products, wired and wireless. I’m also a licensed professional engineer to give some comfort in my credibility. My church recently started having some issues with our old Shure UHF wireless transmitter (10+ years old). I thought it was time to purchase a new unit. After reviewing the specs between the PGX and SLX systems I couldn’t see any difference in the printed specs other than some bells & whistles in the receiver unit. I chose to purchase the PGX24/SM58 unit to save a little money as we didn’t really need the extra bells & whistles. Got the first unit, hooked it up, sync’d the mic, set the gain structure, ready to go. During the service I noticed a lot of audio distortion coming from the unit, and I’m thinking maybe low batteries came with the unit. I put in new batteries after the first service. I had the same problem in the next service. The distortion is so bad I actually had congregation members asking me “What’s up with the microphone, it sounded funny.” I call Shure explain the issue. They tell me “No, it shouldn’t have that distortion in there and to send it back.” I get a new unit the following week. Hook it up and guess what the same crappy distorted audio. I’m frustrated with this result so I start trying to think of anything crazy that might be going on. The PG series transmitter has a -10dB pad switch built into the unit for loud SPL’s, so I’m thinking maybe the transmitter is overloading. I apply the -10dB pad and no change at all. If it is a transmitter overload issue these things won’t handle much as this was used only for speaking. The receiver unit indicated overloading much of the time, but even in non overload conditions the distortion was still the same. Another beast was the switching frequencies on this unit. Lots of cut outs and static when this unit changes frequency due to range (My install is less than 60ft.) This PGX series equipment is very poor quality and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. A side note: The Shure tech happened to mention to me this series of mic was designed for the “Home Karaoke” application. $350 mic for Home Karaoke . . . give me a break. I’m a little leery about even the SLX series now given the specs. I’m going to have to research this issue very carefully with Shure and other users before I use another Shure wireless unit again.

  4. Timothy Dejoris Says:

Very impressed. Big upgrade relative to wired SM58. Much less noise handling the mic, while sensitivity to desired input is better. Highly recommend to anyone considering an upgrade to wireless. Extremely easy to set-up.

I’ve yet to gig with this mic, as I just got it yesterday, but when I got it home and set it up, it sounded great, clear and absolutely no noise, even when left unmuted.

My sound board was showing me +6db of output when the gain was at 3 o’clock, and 0db at noon, so I’m not sure what equipment the negative reviewer was using, but it may be that it works better with some mixers than others.

I plan to gig with this mic this weekend and going forward. I’ll never ditch a wired spare, just because it’s wireless, but I fully expect the backup mic’s case to collect a TON of dust.

The remark that the sensitivy of the mic is definitely true. If you are not “right on the mic”, don’t expect to make it through a mix. That’s what sound people are for, anyway. :) For the money, it’s by far the best wireless mic I’ve seen, having evaluated similar systems from AKG, Sennheiser and Digital Reference.

I usually write my reviews before I gig, because I want to let people know what difference there can be “out of the box” versus “on the road”, as the later is what counts. So, expect a subsequent review from me soon.

    Rock on, Shure!
