The Tascam DP01FX-CD works great ……..when you:
1) READ the instructions!
2) FOLLOW the instructions!
Tascam provides “quick start” guides with a lot of their products which is nice, but for heaven’s sake, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! Tascam did a great job writing an an extremely user friendly instruction manual for the DP01FX-CD.
It is very important that you understand the section about ‘assigning inputs’ if you do exactly as the book says to do,you will not have any problems. I suspect that this is where the previous reviewer may have had problems because I had the same issue until I went back and RE-READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Don’t assume that you are ‘doing it right’ READ THE MANUAL!
If you are looking for a nice inexpensive way to make CD quality recordings at home, whether you have a band or just want to record some karaoke songs, the DP01FX-CD is a nice little unit. The effects and reverb is really sweet. I love mine!
By the way…… Did I mention the part about READING THE INSTRUCTIONS ???

I bought this over a year ago to record some of my more popular songs, and couldn’t figure out the controls until I read the manual thoroughly. This is not something you want for your average 12-year-old who likes to play once in a while… This is for someone who is going to take the time to read the instruction manual, and then proceed to lay down some incredible amateur tracks.
This recorder is pretty straight-forward; there is no capability to set the timing for an individual track, so if you are like me, and not extremely great on timing and tempo, you might be better off getting an expensive software program for your computer, and using that for the heart of your studio.
However, if you have good timing, and can use a metronome (built-in), or have a good drummer, then there really is no problem with this equipment at all.
As far as the microphone problem that one of the other reviewers had, I’ve never encountered that at all. I bought a Condenser Microphone with my Recorder, and purchased the right cable (on my second try) and have had no problems with the sound. [...].

For the most part, this is a pretty good piece of equipment for the price, and for general use.
However, it’s a little complicated unless you read the manual over and over, and sometimes Tascam produces a training video that comes in very handy, but they did not for this one.
If your kid is starting a band, make sure he/she is doing good in school because they’ll need the knowledge to work this.
Tascam’s customer support is generally weak, so don’t rely on them for help.

I started 42 years ago recording. Working my way up to my own Tascam 8 Track & 3216 board with a full blown Studio with 3 PB64 patch bays. Yep! I had more bell and whistles than most 24 track studios. Tascam has gotten a lot of my money over the years.
OK, so I inherit this DP-01, My gosh it took me 20 minutes to figure out how to open the CD tray. I’ve read lots of books on home recording starting with Craig Anderton Home Recording. The Tascam DP-01 Instruction manual does not translate well. Yea, there is a big learning curve on digital recording when you are coming from analog.
But, If Tascam wants anymore of my money they need to put out step by step manuals with lots of pictures or at least get me for another 49.95 for a how to DVD . The problem is now my DP-01 which still smells new, is getting old and dated (What’s Next?). I’m left to read and re-read a badly written manual. Gaw’d what a headache.

As a full-time music teacher and composer of children’s music, this machine has been invaluable. I purchased mine in 2006 and we are still going strong. I agree with the reviewer who says you must carefully follow instructions. It seemed a little daunting at first, so I went through the instruction manual and tabbed the sections that I use the most. I plug in my Yamaha keyboard and lay down the accompaniment track, then add other instrumentation on the other tracks. I love having eight tracks because I can then add all of the harmonies I want using my own voice. Very easy transfer into Master mix mode then onto the cd. I’ve even plugged in two mics and used it to record one of my student concerts. You couldn’t ask for a better home/classroom recording studio in a box.
